Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-sp-</mentioned> apparently reflects metathesis of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ps-</mentioned>, perhaps encouraged by <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_askaz"><ref target="#pgmc_askaz">*askaz</ref></mentioned>. Compare Latvian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lav_apse"><ref target="#cog_lav_apse">apse</ref></mentioned>, Old Prussian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_prg_abse"><ref target="#cog_prg_abse">abse</ref></mentioned>, Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lit_apuse"><ref target="#cog_lit_apuse">ãpušė</ref></mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lit_epuse"><ref target="#cog_lit_epuse">ẽpušė</ref></mentioned>, and Proto-Slavic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sla-x-proto_opsa"><ref target="#cog_sla-x-proto_opsa">*opsā</ref></mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sla-x-proto_opsika"><ref target="#cog_sla-x-proto_opsika">*ōpsīkā</ref></mentioned>, all denoting the aspen. Witczak <bibl corresp="#witczak1991" n="65–75" ana="#omit-author">1991: 65–75</bibl> makes a compelling argument that Old Armenian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_hy_op_i"><ref target="#cog_hy_op_i">ոփի</ref></mentioned> comes from PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ops-</mentioned> (it cannot be derived from the alternative <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aps-</mentioned>). Mallory and Adams <bibl corresp="#ref1997" n="33" ana="#omit-author">1997: 33</bibl> make a case for the word being Indo-European if the Armenian and Old Indic forms indeed come from the same root, since this would prove that it is more widespread than just northern Europe. Nevertheless, this cannot disprove the possibility of an early, widespread <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Wanderwort</mentioned>.</seg>
