The first constituent probably denotes motion or attack toward/against an opponent: Lloyd and Springer interpret PGmc <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*at-</mentioned> as marking the spear’s movement against the enemy, rather than simply as an intensifier. Thus, the compound may originally have meant approximately ‘attack spear’ or ‘spear directed against (an enemy)’. Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_atgeirr"><ref target="#cog_non_atgeirr">atgeirr</ref></mentioned> later developed specialized weapon senses and ultimately denoted ‘halberd’ in Icelandic <bibl corresp="#orkisz2016" n="186–92">Orkisz 2016: 186–92</bibl>. The second constituent <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_gaizaz"><ref target="#pgmc_gaizaz">*gaizaz</ref></mentioned> continues late Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_ghois_o"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_ghois_o">*ǵʰois-ó-</ref></mentioned>, probably from root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_gheis"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_gheis">*ǵʰeis-</ref></mentioned>; compare Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_hesas"><ref target="#cog_san_hesas">हेषस्</ref></mentioned>. Recent work regards Proto-Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_cel-x-proto_gaiso"><ref target="#cog_cel-x-proto_gaiso">*gaiso-</ref></mentioned> as probably borrowed from Germanic rather than an inherited cognate <bibl corresp="#van_sluis2023" n="221–22">van Sluis et al. 2023: 221–22</bibl>.</seg>
