The suffix belongs with Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-atja-</mentioned>/ <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-itja-</mentioned>, a Weak class 1 verb-forming type whose final <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ja-</mentioned>continues the inherited Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">y</mentioned>-present / denominative-factitive suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-yé/ó- </mentioned><bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="201, 323">Ringe 2017: 201, 323</bibl>. The preceding <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-at- </mentioned>is the PGmc reflex of a pre-Germanic dental stem element <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ad- </mentioned>or thematicized <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-od-</mentioned>.  The suffix was probably formed from <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-yo-</mentioned> verbs that had earlier nominal stems ending in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-d- </mentioned>or <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-do-</mentioned>, where the original function of the dental element was as an extension to a root or stem <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="§193">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: §193</bibl>. Ancient Greek suffixes <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_azo_x2"><ref target="#cog_grc_azo_x2">-άζω</ref></mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_izo"><ref target="#cog_grc_izo">-ίζω</ref></mentioned>and the PGmc suffix are formally and functionally similar; however, both systems may have developed in parallel from similar earlier Indo-European patterns of dental stem extensions with *-yé/ó-verbal derivations <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="§193">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: §193</bibl>.</seg>
