LIV treats the Germanic (and Sanskrit) verb as an innovative formation employing the inherited causative pattern, but gives no further explanation <bibl corresp="#rix2001" n="22, 230">Rix et al. 2001: 22, 230</bibl>. However, a newer analysis from Mächler <bibl corresp="#machler2017b" n="42–43" ana="#omit-author">2017b: 42–43</bibl> views the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*a</mentioned>-vocalism as favoring an old formation, possibly inherited directly from PIE.
