This derivation is disputed: the singular and plural reflect different stem formations (<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ija</mentioned>-stem <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_eyrir"><ref target="#cog_non_eyrir">eyrir</ref></mentioned> beside apparently<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> a</mentioned>-stem <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_aurar"><ref target="#cog_non_aurar">aurar</ref></mentioned>), and the Scandinavian ounce of 26.8 g corresponds closely to the Roman <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">uncia</mentioned>, not to the much lighter <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_aureus"><ref target="#cog_lat_aureus">aureus</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#ruthstrom1993" n="93–98">Ruthström 1993: 93–98</bibl>. Ruthström instead derives <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_aurar"><ref target="#cog_non_aurar">aurar</ref></mentioned> from an old Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">r</mentioned>-extension related to <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_audaz"><ref target="#pgmc_audaz">*audaz</ref></mentioned>, with <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_eyrir"><ref target="#cog_non_eyrir">eyrir</ref></mentioned> formed secondarily from it, but acknowledges that the proposed semantic development remains hypothetical <bibl corresp="#ruthstrom1993" n="100–101, 117–18">Ruthström 1993: 100–101, 117–18</bibl>.</seg>
