The compound is directly reflected in Old English <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ang_eosturmonath_eastermonath"><ref target="#cog_ang_eosturmonath_eastermonath">Ēosturmōnaþ/Ēastermōnaþ</ref></mentioned> and Old High German <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_goh_ostarmanod"><ref target="#cog_goh_ostarmanod">ōstarmānōd</ref></mentioned>; Bede explicitly equates Old English <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Eosturmonath </mentioned>with April and states that it had formerly been named after the goddess <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Ēostre</mentioned>, whose festival was celebrated in that month <bibl corresp="#bede1999" n="54">Bede 1999: 54</bibl>. Old English lexicographical evidence likewise identifies <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">eastermōnaþ</mentioned> as Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_aprilis_mensis"><ref target="#cog_lat_aprilis_mensis">Aprīlis mensis</ref></mentioned>. The Easter name itself is a specifically West Germanic formation: Lehmann <bibl corresp="#lehmann1986a" n="271" ana="#omit-author">1986a: 271</bibl> notes Old English <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">easter</mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">eastron</mentioned> beside Old High German <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">astra</mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ast(a)run</mentioned> and Bede’s association with <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Ēostre</mentioned>. The historicity and nature of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Ēostre</mentioned> remain disputed, and recent scholarship cautions against assuming a demonstrably pan-Germanic goddess <bibl corresp="#sermon2022" n="141">Sermon 2022: 141</bibl>.</seg>
