Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="44" ana="#omit-author">2013: 44</bibl> reconstructs a North Germanic root <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aw(V)d-</mentioned> and interprets <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*awadī</mentioned> as a feminine formation beside an unattested masculine <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">form</mentioned>; compare Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_aedr"><ref target="#cog_non_aedr">æðr</ref></mentioned> and Swedish dialectal <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">åd</mentioned>. Closely associated with Northern Sámi <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sme_havda"><ref target="#cog_sme_havda">hávda</ref></mentioned> and Lule Sámi <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_smj_avdda"><ref target="#cog_smj_avdda">ávdđa</ref></mentioned>. North Saami <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sme_havda"><ref target="#cog_sme_havda">hávda</ref></mentioned> belongs to a group of etymologically obscure Sámi words whose vocalism suggests borrowing from an unknown substrate after the Great Sámi Vowel Shift <bibl corresp="#aikio2012" n="84">Aikio 2012: 84</bibl>. Šorgo <bibl corresp="#sorgo2020" n="435" ana="#omit-author">2020: 435</bibl> argues that the Germanic and Sámi terms may derive from a third, lost language, although borrowing from one branch into the other is possible; the exclusively northern Germanic distribution may indicate that the word entered Proto-North-Germanic only after the breakup of Proto-Germanic proper. Earlier comparisons with Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_ati"><ref target="#cog_san_ati">आति</ref></mentioned> and PIE <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ewis"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ewis">*h₂éwis</ref></mentioned> are phonologically formally unconvincing <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="44">Kroonen 2013: 44</bibl> <bibl corresp="#lockwood1974" n="112–15">Lockwood 1974: 112–15</bibl>.</seg>
