The compound is reflected by Old English <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ang_iegland"><ref target="#cog_ang_iegland">īeġland</ref></mentioned> and Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_eyland"><ref target="#cog_non_eyland">eyland</ref></mentioned>, but its reconstruction to Proto-Germanic is uncertain. Old Frisian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ofs_a_lond"><ref target="#cog_ofs_a_lond">ā-lönd</ref></mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ofs_ey_land"><ref target="#cog_ofs_ey_land">ey-land</ref></mentioned> appears to have arisen by secondary addition of ‘land’ to the inherited word for ‘island’, partly to distinguish it from homonyms <bibl corresp="#boutkan2005" n="2">Boutkan &amp; Siebinga 2005: 2</bibl>, and Carr <bibl corresp="#carr1939" n="37–38" ana="#omit-author">1939: 37–38</bibl> accordingly regarded the compound as post-Proto-Germanic, while conceding that the Old English and Old Norse forms could formally continue a Proto-Germanic formation. Dutch <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_nld_eiland"><ref target="#cog_nld_eiland">eiland</ref></mentioned> and related continental forms are probably borrowed from Old Frisian and therefore provide no independent evidence for Proto-Germanic antiquity <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2014" n="527–538">de Vaan 2014: 527–538</bibl>. A Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*awjōlandą</mentioned> is possible, but parallel secondary formations in the daughter languages cannot be excluded.</seg>
