Heidermanns <bibl corresp="#heidermanns1993" n="108–09" ana="#omit-author">1993: 108–09</bibl> and Orel <bibl corresp="#orel2003" n="27" ana="#omit-author">2003: 27</bibl> reconstruct a neuter <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ja-</mentioned> formation beside <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aþala-</mentioned>, reflected in Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_odli_edli"><ref target="#cog_non_odli_edli">ǫðli/eðli</ref></mentioned>, Old English <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ang_aethelu"><ref target="#cog_ang_aethelu">æþelu</ref></mentioned>, and related West Germanic forms. Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="40" ana="#omit-author">2013: 40</bibl> instead reconstructs <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aþulja-</mentioned> beside <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aþala-</mentioned>, primarily in the adjective <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_athulijaz"><ref target="#pgmc_athulijaz">*aþulijaz</ref></mentioned>, with Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_odli_edli"><ref target="#cog_non_odli_edli">ǫðli/eðli</ref></mentioned> as a corresponding neuter substantive. Johnsen <bibl corresp="#johnsen2005a" n="151" ana="#omit-author">2005a: 151</bibl> shows that Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_odli"><ref target="#cog_non_odli">ǫðli</ref></mentioned> requires Proto-Norse<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *aþulija-</mentioned>, its final <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-i</mentioned> pointing to earlier <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ij-</mentioned> after two short syllables. The exact function of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ija-</mentioned> is uncertain; a substantivized neuter beside <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_athulijaz"><ref target="#pgmc_athulijaz">*aþulijaz</ref></mentioned> is at least as plausible as a specifically collective formation.</seg>
