Kroonen reconstructs the underlying Germanic noun <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*bada-</mentioned> from Norwegian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_nor_bad"><ref target="#cog_nor_bad">bad</ref></mentioned> and East Danish <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_dan_bad"><ref target="#cog_dan_bad">bad</ref></mentioned> and derives <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*badōjan-</mentioned> (here <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_badona"><ref target="#pgmc_badona">*badōną</ref></mentioned>) from it <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="47">Kroonen 2013: 47</bibl>. The Indo-Iranian comparanda instead point to a long-vowel base: Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_badhate"><ref target="#cog_san_badhate">बाधते</ref></mentioned> and Younger Avestan <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ave_auui_bada"><ref target="#cog_ave_auui_bada">𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬌-𐬠𐬁𐬜𐬀</ref></mentioned> are analyzed as reflecting <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*bʰeh₁dʰ-</mentioned> or <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*bʰēdʰ-</mentioned>, with the wider relationship uncertain <bibl corresp="#ref2010" n="20–21, s.v. *bād">Cheung 2007: 20–21, s.v. *bād</bibl> <bibl corresp="#mayrhofer1996" n="222">Mayrhofer 1996: 222</bibl> <bibl corresp="#rix2001" n="68">Rix et al. 2001: 68</bibl>.
