Though <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013">Kroonen 2013</bibl> considers the word to have no cognates outside Proto-Germanic, Acharian has deduced Old Armenian բով (bov, ‘furnace, glowing, smoldering, fiery’) as a cognate, though he notes an alternative origin in PIE *bʰuH- (‘to be, become, grow, appear’) giving it an original sense of ‘fire pit’.</seg>
