            <seg type="p">Conventionally from Proto-Indo-European *bʰérH-ō ~ *bʰr̥H-n-és, from the root *bʰerH- (‘brown’), as a tabooistic reference to the bear as "the brown one". <bibl corresp="#ringe2017">Ringe 2017</bibl> suggests instead *ǵʰwer- (‘wild animal’); however, as <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013">Kroonen 2013</bibl> notes, this derivation depends on the sound change from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰw- &gt; Proto-Germanic *b-, the validity of which is disputed. <bibl corresp="#blazek2017">Blažek 2017</bibl> alternatively suggests a derivation from *bʰerH- (‘to pierce, strike’), from which several IE terms for ‘beehive’ are derived, e.g. Proto-Slavic <mentioned xml:lang="sla-x-proto" target="#cog_sla-x-proto_b_rt"><ref target="#cog_sla-x-proto_b_rt">*bъrtь</ref></mentioned> (‘hive of wild bees’).</seg>
