            <seg type="p">Uncertain. <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013">Kroonen 2013</bibl> posits a possible derivation from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₃-tó-m, a neuter collective noun from *bʰleh₃- (‘to bloom’) morphing into the sense of ‘blooming red, blushing’ &gt; ‘liquid blood’). He also suggests a possible derivation from *bʰleh₁-tó-m from *bʰleh₁- (‘to blow’), with a sense of ‘blowing or gushing out’, ultimately from <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*bʰel-</mentioned>(‘to blow, swell up’; compare Old Armenian բեղմն (bełmn, ‘semen’ from the same root)). <bibl corresp="#boutkan2005">e.g., Boutkan &amp; Siebinga 2005</bibl> believe it has a non-IE substrate origin, especially given the fact that the widely distributed PIE word for ‘blood’, the r/n-stem <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁ésh₂r̥</mentioned> ~ <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁sh₂éns</mentioned> (cf. Hittite <mentioned xml:lang="hit" target="#cog_hit_e_es_har_eshar_x2"><ref target="#cog_hit_e_es_har_eshar_x2">𒂊𒌍𒄯</ref></mentioned> (e-eš-ḫar, /ēšḫar/), Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_ear"><ref target="#cog_grc_ear">ἔαρ</ref></mentioned> (éar), Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_asrj"><ref target="#cog_san_asrj">असृज्</ref></mentioned> (asṛj), and Latin sanguī̆s) does not show up with that sense in Proto-Germanic (though it did survive in *īsarną (‘iron’).</seg>
