Possibly related to PIE root *bʰrews- (‘break’). Possible cognates are Proto-Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="cel-x-proto" target="#cog_cel-x-proto_bresta"><ref target="#cog_cel-x-proto_bresta">*brestā</ref></mentioned> (‘fight, combat’) <bibl corresp="#matasovic2009">Matasović 2009a</bibl> and its many reflexes and Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="lit" target="#cog_lit_brasketi"><ref target="#cog_lit_brasketi">braškėti</ref></mentioned> (‘to crack, clatter, make a breaking sound’). <bibl corresp="#beekes2010">Beekes 2010</bibl> also connects this root to Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_pharsos"><ref target="#cog_grc_pharsos">φάρσος</ref></mentioned> (phársos, ‘any piece cut off, portion’) and Hittite  𒉺-𒅈-𒀸 / 𒉺-𒅈-𒅆 / 𒉺-𒅈-𒅆-𒅀 (pa-ar-aš / pa-ar-ši / pa-ar-ši-ya /parš-//parši-//paršiya-/, ‘to break; crumble; violate a boundary’) and its nominal counterpart, 𒉺-𒅈-𒊭 (pa-ar-ša /parša-/, ‘a morsel or fragment’), which are a good phonological and semantic fit.</seg>
