Possibly Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewt-e/o-, from root *bʰrewt- (‘to break’), which Pokorny 1959 treats as a t-extension of *bʰrew- (‘destroy, break’). Likely an intransitive doublet of the transitive *breutaną (‘to destroy, crush, break (open), bud’).
