*bʰuH- to be, become, grow, appear

noun masculine a-stem bush; thicket Uncertain. Possibly derived from *būaną (‘to dwell, reside’) or its root, Proto-Indo-European *bʰuH- (‘to swell, grow’), but this would involve the addition of two separate extensions (*-s- and *-k-). Another possibility is that it is from a substrate language, noting that many northwest European languages have words for flora and fauna with -sk- and -st-. The Latin borrowing theory is unlikely: the borrowing was almost definitely from Proto-Germanic to Latin.
