adja-stemdeadFrom pre-Germanic *dʰow-tó-s, the original past participle of *dawjaną (‘to die’), from an o-grade form of Proto-Indo-European root *dʰew- (‘to die, pass away’). Once the original verb was integrated with the Class 6 strong verbs, it acquired the new past participle form *dawanaz, and the old form became lexicalized as an adjective.
