verb Weak class 1 to suffocate, extinguish Probably from a pre-Germanic derivative of Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰey- (‘decline, perish; die out’), perhaps pre-Germanic *dʰgʷʰoy-sk-éye/o-, an o-grade form of the root built on an original *sḱé- inchoative present Jasanoff 2003 Heidermanns 1993, later remodeled as a Weak class 1 causative. Related to *dwīnaną (‘to dwindle, disappear’).
