Possibly from pre-Germanic *dīkkaz from Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*dʰeyǵʰ-nó-s (</mentioned>Kluge's Law provides for the -k- in the current term), from *dʰeyǵʰ- (‘to knead; form, shape’) <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013">Kroonen 2013</bibl>. A derivation from *dʰeygʷ- (‘to stick, stab, dig’) is somewhat problematic, as there is no explanation for the loss of labialization (cf. PIE *wegʷ- &gt; PGmc *wakwaz; PIE *neygʷ- &gt; PGmc *nikwaz). This root would normally lead to PGmc **dīkwaz.</seg>
