<seg type="p">Probably a substrate loan or European Wanderwort. Traditionally compared with Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_aper"><ref target="#cog_lat_aper">aper</ref></mentioned> (‘wild boar’) from Proto-Italic <mentioned xml:lang="itc-x-proto" target="#cog_itc-x-proto_apros"><ref target="#cog_itc-x-proto_apros">*apros</ref></mentioned> (‘wild boar’), Proto-Balto-Slavic <mentioned xml:lang="bsl-x-proto" target="#cog_bsl-x-proto_weprios"><ref target="#cog_bsl-x-proto_weprios">*weprios</ref></mentioned> (‘board, wild boar’), and Thracian ἐβρος (ebros, ‘buck’), and sometimes reconstructed as PIE *h₁ep-r-. However, the comparison involves persistent irregularities: Italic *a- beside Proto-Germanic *e-, and especially Balto-Slavic initial *w-, are not easily derived from a single inherited PIE preform. Šorgo (2020) therefore treats *eburaz as a likely substratum lexeme, with the Proto-Germanic *e- possibly reflecting a substrate vowel *æ-.</seg>
