            <seg type="p">From Proto-Indo-European *per-in-éh₂, a nominalization of an adjectival/relational formation from root *per- (‘to try, dare, risk’). <bibl corresp="#walde1927">Walde 1927</bibl> considers this a fossilized deadjectival or abstract nominal derivative signifying ‘the extraordinary thing’, or more dynamically, ‘that which oversteps the proper boundary/measure.’ Probably related to *fērō (‘danger’). According to Walde, *fērō reflects an active, transitive sense of ‘pursuing a target / laying a trap / endangering’, while *firinō represents the abstract nominalization of exceeding or transgressing a boundary. <bibl corresp="#pokorny1959">Pokorny 1959</bibl> notes cognates Old Armenian փորձ (pʻorj, ‘attempt’)  and Greek πεῖρᾰ (peîră, ‘trial’).</seg>
