adj a-stem sad, sorrowful From Pre-Germanic *gʰowro-s, probably from a suffixed form of Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewH- (‘to call on, invoke’) or from *gʰewro-. Cognate with Old Irish gúre (‘pain, pang’), Sanskrit घोर (ghora, ‘terrible’), Proto-Slavic *žuriti (‘to rage’), and Lithuanian žiaurùs.
