noun neuter a-stem innards; guts; internal organs Uncertain. Perhaps from either Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker(t)- (‘to cut, divide’) (to which Orel compares Proto-West Germanic *herþ (‘hearth’)) or *ḱerd- (‘heart’), with the suffix *-þrą. Compare Lithuanian kartóklys (‘omasum’).
