            <seg type="p">From a pre-Germanic thematic renewal of the older Proto-Indo-European athematic stative suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-éh₁-</mentioned>. In PIE, this suffix formed stative presents and appears to have been accented, non-ablauting, and athematic, as reflected by Latin second-conjugation statives such as <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_rubere"><ref target="#cog_lat_rubere">rubēre</ref></mentioned> &lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁rudh-éh₁- </mentioned>and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_tacere"><ref target="#cog_lat_tacere">tacēre</ref></mentioned> &lt; post-PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*tak-éh₁-</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="157, 203–206">Ringe 2017: 157, 203–206</bibl>. In Proto-Germanic, however, the inherited athematic stative was replaced by a new thematic suffix complex <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*‑ə‑yé/ó- </mentioned><bibl corresp="#bennett1962">Bennett 1962</bibl>, apparently from <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-h₁-yé/ó-</mentioned>. According to Ringe, this arose when passive/resultative participles in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-h₁-tó- </mentioned>were created beside the old stative presents; the suffix complex developed regularly to <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ə-tó-</mentioned>, and new presents in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ə-yé/ó- </mentioned>were then back-formed from those participles <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="157">Ringe 2017: 157</bibl>.</seg>
            <seg type="p">In PGmc this yielded the class 3 weak-verb alternation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ai- ~ *-ja-</mentioned>, with <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ai- </mentioned>continuing the e-grade-like alternant and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ja- </mentioned>continuing the zero-grade/thematic alternant. This alternation is preserved most clearly in relics such as Old Norse<mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_segja"><ref target="#cog_non_segja">segja</ref></mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_thegja"><ref target="#cog_non_thegja">þegja</ref></mentioned>, and is presupposed by northern West Germanic class 3 forms; Gothic and the majority Old Norse type later generalized or remodeled parts of the paradigm, while Old High German generalized <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-ē- </mentioned>&lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ai- </mentioned><bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="308–13">Fulk 2018: 308–13</bibl> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="158, 286–89">Ringe 2017: 158, 286–89</bibl>. Ringe treats Weak class 3 as historically connected with PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ē</mentioned> &lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-eh₁-</mentioned>, with or without a thematicizing suffix, and notes that a major PIE use was deadjectival statives meaning ‘have the quality of the adjective’, alongside deverbal duratives and some Gothic factitives.</seg>
