            <seg type="p">From Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-yó-m</mentioned>, the neuter form of the widespread relational/adjectival suffix <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_yo_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_yo_s">*-yó-s</ref></mentioned> ‘belonging to, connected with’. The same suffixal complex underlies Proto-Germanic adjectival formations such as <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_i_jaz"><ref target="#pgmc_i_jaz">*-(i)jaz</ref></mentioned>. The formation was especially productive in combination with the collective prefix <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ga"><ref target="#pgmc_ga">*ga-</ref></mentioned>, whose Germanic use as a collective/intensive prefix continues the older sense ‘together, with’  <bibl corresp="#ref2011" n="2047">Watkins 2011: 2047</bibl>. Compare Proto-Slavic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sla-x-proto_je"><ref target="#cog_sla-x-proto_je">*-ьje</ref></mentioned>, a close formal and semantic match, and more broadly Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_ium"><ref target="#cog_lat_ium">-ium</ref></mentioned> and Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_ion"><ref target="#cog_grc_ion">-ιον</ref></mentioned>, which continue the same Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-yó-m</mentioned> type as neuter noun-forming suffixes, though not always with a collective function. Meier-Brügger<bibl corresp="#meier_brugger2003" n="281–85" ana="#omit-author">2003: 281–85</bibl> describes <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-yo-</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-yó-</mentioned> as the most widespread Indo-European suffix for adjectives of belonging or relation.</seg>
