            <seg type="p">From earlier Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-illaz</mentioned>, from pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-i-tló-s</mentioned>, a masculine thematic derivative of the Proto-Indo-European instrument suffix <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_tlo"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_tlo">*-tlo-</ref></mentioned>, originally added to the stem of<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> ye</mentioned>-presents (with the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-i-</mentioned>being the residue of the<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> ye</mentioned>-present suffix). In PGmc, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tl-</mentioned>became <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-dl-</mentioned>due to Verner’s Law and the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-d-</mentioned>was then assimilated, giving <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ll</mentioned>-; this geminate was later shortened in the unstressed suffix, giving productive <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ilaz</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2017">Kroonen 2017</bibl> <bibl corresp="#olsen1988" n="19–24">Olsen 1988: 19–24</bibl>. The suffix was then generalized within PGmc to form instrument nouns.</seg>
