It is a result of reanalysis of forms in which the suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-assuz </mentioned>was added to weak or denominative verbal stems in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-inō</mentioned>-. The suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-assuz</mentioned> probably arose from the coalescence of stem-final <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-at-</mentioned> with the inherited nominal suffix <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_tu_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_tu_s">*-tu-s</ref></mentioned>. Forms of the type <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*X-in-assuz </mentioned>were reinterpreted as containing a single suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*X-inassuz</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#kluge1899" n="69–70">Kluge 1899: 69–70</bibl> <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="159–62">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 159–62</bibl> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="325">Ringe 2017: 325</bibl>. This suffix became extremely productive in the West Germanic languages (cf.
