It was originally a compound suffix consisting of a Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n</mentioned>-stem element plus the PIE suffix <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_ko_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_ko_s">*-ko-s</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="198–207">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 198–207</bibl>. Similar in formation are related Proto-Germanic variants  <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ungo"><ref target="#pgmc_ungo">*-ungō</ref></mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ingō</mentioned> from PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-n̥-kéh₂ </mentioned>/ <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-en-kéh₂</mentioned>. This compound suffix was reinterpreted by Proto-Germanic speakers as one suffix (<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ing-</mentioned>), and it became extremely productive in North and West Germanic. Cognates of this compound suffix in Indo-European are found in Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="lit" target="#cog_lit_ingas"><ref target="#cog_lit_ingas">-ingas</ref></mentioned> and Latvian <mentioned xml:lang="lav" target="#cog_lav_igs"><ref target="#cog_lav_igs">-īgs</ref></mentioned> which have been shown to relate directly to the Germanic suffix <bibl corresp="#ambrazas1994">Ambrazas 1994</bibl><bibl corresp="#andersson2003" ana="#omit-author">2003</bibl>. However, the closest formal parallel is Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="lit" target="#cog_lit_ininkas"><ref target="#cog_lit_ininkas">-ininkas</ref></mentioned> (and related Baltic formations) that show a similar complex formed by combining <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-n- </mentioned>with a velar suffix <bibl corresp="#kluge1899" n="12">Kluge 1899: 12</bibl>.</seg>
