            <seg type="p">From pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-én-ih₂ ~ *-n̥-yéh₂</mentioned>, an ablauting compound suffix consisting of an Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*n-</mentioned>formant, used in individualizing, appurtenance, and participant-noun formations, plus the Proto-Indo-European feminine suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ih₂ ~ *-yéh₂</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#johnsen2005a" n="143–44">Johnsen 2005a: 143–44</bibl>.  The inherited ablaut gave Proto-Germanic nominative singular <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-inī</mentioned> beside oblique <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-unjō-</mentioned>, which was later leveled. This explains the mixture of forms seen in the daughter languages: Gothic has isolated <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_ini"><ref target="#cog_got_ini">-𐌹𐌽𐌹</ref></mentioned>, Old Norse has rare <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_ynja"><ref target="#cog_non_ynja">-ynja</ref></mentioned>, while West Germanic generalized <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-in-</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-inn-</mentioned> (though Old Saxon also had <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-unnia-</mentioned> from the oblique form in addition to<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> -in-</mentioned> forms)  <bibl corresp="#johnsen2005a" n="143–44">Johnsen 2005a: 143–44</bibl>. The closest Indo-European comparanda are Proto-Slavic  <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sla-x-proto_yni"><ref target="#cog_sla-x-proto_yni">*-yni</ref></mentioned> and Indo-Iranian and Celtic formations in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-n-ī</mentioned>, especially Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_rajni"><ref target="#cog_san_rajni">राज्ञी॑</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#monier_williams1899" n="875">Monier-Williams 1899: 875</bibl> and Proto-Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="cel-x-proto" target="#cog_cel-x-proto_rigani"><ref target="#cog_cel-x-proto_rigani">*rīganī</ref></mentioned>. These were both built from the word for ‘king’ with similar -<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n-</mentioned> + a feminine suffix <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="119–22">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 119–22</bibl> <bibl corresp="#matasovic2009" n="311">Matasović 2009a: 311</bibl> <bibl corresp="#mccone1998" n="1–5">McCone 1998: 1–5</bibl>.
