The connection with Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_gwelbh"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_gwelbh">*gʷelbʰ-</ref></mentioned> (‘womb’) is problematic due to the missing labiovelar in Germanic. However, *gʷl̥bʰus- or the weak stem of *gʷélbʰ-us ~ *gʷl̥bʰ-éws would yield *kulbuz-, from which the variant *kelbuz-, also attested in Germanic, could have been derived analogically as a strong stem, whose influence might explain the missing labialization in *kalbiz-.</seg>
            <seg type="p">Pokorny connects it to Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_galba"><ref target="#cog_lat_galba">galba</ref></mentioned> (‘little worm, larva; small person or animal’), itself perhaps of Gaulish origin, and proposes Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_e"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_e">*gel</ref></mentioned> (e)b⁽ʰ⁾- as a labial extension of *gel- (‘form into a ball; ball’); compare Old English clyppan (‘to hug, embrace; to clasp’) (modern English clasp), German Klafter (‘armful, fathom’), Latvian <mentioned xml:lang="lav" target="#cog_lav_glabt"><ref target="#cog_lav_glabt">glābt</ref></mentioned> (‘to save’), and Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_glaeba"><ref target="#cog_lat_glaeba">glaeba</ref></mentioned> (‘clod’), globus (‘round object’). However, such irregular correspondences between *kalbaz and galba would more likely point to substrate origin.</seg>
