Compare Lithuanian gnýbti (‘idem’), žnýbti (‘to pinch, snuff a candle’). Whether the root further derives from a Proto-Indo-European *ǵen-, *gen- (‘to pinch, squeeze, bend, press, ball up’) (whence perhaps *knudaną (‘to knead’)) is unclear.
