The root *gʷerH- may be further identical to *gʷerh₂- (‘heavy’), from the same semantic tree as Proto-Indo-European *gʷréh₂wō (‘quern, millstone’), thus "to grind with a quern" > "to weaken, make lax" > "to make still, quiet".
