These belong historically to the Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-men-/*-mon-</mentioned> nominal complex: neuter *-men-stems chiefly formed action, state, and result nouns, while related animate <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-mon</mentioned>-stems denoted agents, individuals, possessors, or personified manifestations.
