мѣръ μαρμαίρω to flash, sparkle *mer- to rub, grab, steal merus pure

adj ja-stem renowned, famous, great Vṛddhi gerundive of otherwise unattested strong verb *meraną, the original meaning being "shining", with these terms apparently tracing back to a Proto-Indo-European *mer- (‘to shine, sparkle, excel’). Compare Ancient Greek μαρμαίρω (marmaírō, ‘to flash, sparkle’), Latin merus (‘pure’), as well as Old Church Slavonic мѣръ (měrŭ), Old Irish már, mór.
