In Proto-Germanic, these inherited participles could be substantivized as agent nouns. Fulk  <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="178–79" ana="#omit-author">2018: 178–79</bibl> treats these “<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">nd</mentioned>-stems” as substantivized PIE present participles in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-nt-</mentioned>, while Ringe  <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="224" ana="#omit-author">2017: 224</bibl> is more cautious, noting that the productive participial system was remodeled differently in the daughter branches and that it may be rash to project a separate fossilized <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-nd-</mentioned> agent-noun class fully back into Proto-Germanic; nevertheless, the source is clearly participial. The suffix is cognate with Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_ant_at"><ref target="#cog_san_ant_at">-अन्त्-/-अत्-</ref></mentioned>, Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_on"><ref target="#cog_grc_on">-ων</ref></mentioned> ~ <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_ontos"><ref target="#cog_grc_ontos">-οντος</ref></mentioned>, and Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_ens"><ref target="#cog_lat_ens">-ēns</ref></mentioned>~ <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_entis"><ref target="#cog_lat_entis">-entis-</ref></mentioned>, all from the same PIE present participial formation.</seg>
