Krahe and Meid <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="115–18" ana="#omit-author">1969: 115–18</bibl> compare forms such as Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_vahni"><ref target="#cog_san_vahni">वह्नि॑</ref></mentioned>, Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="lit" target="#cog_lit_slaunis"><ref target="#cog_lit_slaunis">šlaunis</ref></mentioned>, and Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_clunis"><ref target="#cog_lat_clunis">clūnis</ref></mentioned>. In Proto-Germanic, direct inherited <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-nis</mentioned> was fully productive only in Gothic. The suffix became newly productive as a verbal abstract suffix with weak verbs, where it was added to the present stem: Weak class 1 <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_iniz"><ref target="#pgmc_iniz">*-īniz</ref></mentioned> from pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-eye-nis</mentioned> or <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-iye-nis</mentioned>, Weak class 2 <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_oniz"><ref target="#pgmc_oniz">*-ōniz</ref></mentioned> from pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-eh₂(ye)-nis</mentioned>, and Weak class 3 <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ainiz</mentioned> from pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-oye-ni-s</mentioned>, becoming PGmc <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_iniz"><ref target="#pgmc_iniz">*-īniz</ref></mentioned> , <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_oniz"><ref target="#pgmc_oniz">*-ōniz</ref></mentioned>, and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ainiz, </mentioned>all secondary class-specific formations <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="115–18">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 115–18</bibl>.
