verb Strong class 2 to stroke, wipe Probably originally *streuganą, with -k- due to influence from the iterative *strukkōną, from a Proto-Indo-European *strewgʰ- (‘to stroke, shave’). Related to Proto-Slavic *strъgati (‘to scrape’), Lithuanian strùgas (‘short, cropped’). Compare also *strīkaną (‘to stroke’), which is apparently unrelated, despite strikingly similar phonetics and semantics.
