Dunkel <bibl corresp="#dunkel2014" n="334–345" ana="#omit-author">2014: 334–345</bibl> compares Vedic Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sa-x-vedic_u"><ref target="#cog_sa-x-vedic_u">उ</ref></mentioned> and Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_au"><ref target="#cog_grc_au">αὖ</ref></mentioned>, from an originally coordinative formation. The interrogative function is secondary: an additive or sentence-connecting enclitic ‘and, also, in addition’ was refunctionalized as a marker of an added, potentially alternative proposition, and then as a general polar-question marker. Dunkel explicitly compares Lühr’s <bibl corresp="#luhr1995" n="119–30" ana="#omit-author">1995: 119–30</bibl> Lithuanian development, where inherited conjunctions meaning ‘or’ and ‘and’ were reanalyzed as question particles.</seg>
            <seg type="p">An alternative derivation from PIE <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_we"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_we">*-we</ref></mentioned> remains semantically attractive, since Gothic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_u"><ref target="#cog_got_u">-𐌿</ref></mentioned>occurs in binary questions, but it is formally and morphologically less economical. Dunkel <bibl corresp="#dunkel2014" n="845–48" ana="#omit-author">2014: 845–48</bibl> reconstructs <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_we"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_we">*-we</ref></mentioned> as a separate enclitic disjunctive particle with reflexes such as Latin <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-ve</mentioned>, Vedic वा (<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">vā</mentioned>), Gaulish <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-ue</mentioned>, and Ancient Greek ἤ (<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ḗ</mentioned>), all meaning ‘or’, and Tocharian B <mentioned xml:lang="txb" target="#cog_txb_wa"><ref target="#cog_txb_wa">wa</ref></mentioned>; deriving Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-u</mentioned> from this particle would separate it from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_uh"><ref target="#pgmc_uh">*-uh</ref></mentioned>, which Dunkel derives from <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂u-kʷe</mentioned>,  and would require an additional account of the loss or remodeling of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*w-</mentioned>.</seg>
