Parallel formations include <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-akaz </mentioned>and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ikaz</mentioned>. Kluge <bibl corresp="#kluge1899" n="30–33" ana="#omit-author">1899: 30–33</bibl> notes the diminutive, animal name, and personal name formations with <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-k-</mentioned>, while Krahe and Meid <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="211–16" ana="#omit-author">1969: 211–16</bibl> group these with general <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-k-</mentioned> suffixes, noting that they are especially common in animal names, plant names, concrete nouns, feminine formations, diminutives, pet names, and other emotionally colored formations, above all in the Low German–Dutch and Anglo-Frisian areas, though also elsewhere in Germanic. They argue that Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-k-</mentioned>can have two historical sources: some instances may be from inherited Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-g-</mentioned>, while others may reflect unshifted substrate <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-k-</mentioned>, especially in North Sea Germanic words with opaque etymology and suspicious initial <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*p-</mentioned> (which is rare in PIE). Olsen <bibl corresp="#olsen1999" n="584–88" ana="#omit-author">1999: 584–88</bibl> compares Classical Armenian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_xcl_owk_uk"><ref target="#cog_xcl_owk_uk">-ուկ</ref></mentioned>, which may be Iranian or inherited, and notes that if Armenian and Germanic are connected, both appear to reflect a voiced stop counterpart to the more common voiceless <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-k-</mentioned> of comparable Indo-European diminutives; she suggests either generalization from thematicized consonant-stem variants or "expressive gemination" <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-kk</mentioned>- as possible explanations. Functional, but not necessarily regular phonological, comparanda include Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_ka"><ref target="#cog_san_ka">-क</ref></mentioned> and Ancient Greek diminutive formations in <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_iskos"><ref target="#cog_grc_iskos">-ισκος</ref></mentioned>.</seg>
