The alternation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ing-</mentioned> : <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ung-</mentioned> reflects suffixal ablaut, conventionally reconstructed as PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-en-ko-</mentioned> : <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-n̥-ko-</mentioned>, with the corresponding feminine formations being pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-en-kéh₂-</mentioned> : <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-n̥-kéh₂-</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="53">Fulk 2018: 53</bibl> <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="50–51">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 50–51</bibl>. The feminine abstract use itself appears to be a Germanic innovation, probably encouraged by the recurrent association of masculine personal or agentive nouns in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ingaz/*-ungaz</mentioned> with corresponding feminine abstracts and by the analogical enlargement of older, simpler abstract nouns <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="209–10">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 209–10</bibl>. In its earliest recoverable distribution, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ingō </mentioned>was associated chiefly with Weak class 1 verbs and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ungō</mentioned> with Weak class 2 verbs, whereas both variants occurred with nominal and adjectival bases; this division was subsequently obscured by analogical extension and dialectal redistribution <bibl corresp="#kluge1899" n="79–80">Kluge 1899: 79–80</bibl> <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="209–11">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 209–11</bibl>. The suffix is not productively represented in Gothic, and there are no secure cognates outside Germanic for the completed feminine abstract formation as such.</seg>
