            <seg type="p">From the nominative singular of the Proto-Indo-European individualizing <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n</mentioned>-stem suffix<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *-ō(n)</mentioned>, with oblique forms with ablauting<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *-on-</mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-en-</mentioned>, and zero-grade <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-n-</mentioned>. Originally the suffix formed nouns denoting an individual characterized by the base, especially from adjectives and participles. Secondarily it formed nouns from other nouns with the sense ‘one belonging to, associated with X’ <bibl corresp="#pronk2015" n="327–28">Pronk 2015: 327–28</bibl>. This became a masculine an-stem suffix in PGmc that had <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ô </mentioned>in the nominative singular, and oblique forms of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*–an–</mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*–in–</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="168–71">Fulk 2018: 168–71</bibl>.  Most PGmc masculine n-stems continue PIE amphikinetic<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> n</mentioned>-stems, in which ablaut and accent alternated between root, suffix, and ending <bibl corresp="#kroonen2011a" n="28–29">Kroonen 2011a: 28–29</bibl>. The root ablaut was mostly lost in the daughter Germanic languages, but there are still some remnants left in the form of fossilized doublets or split-off forms; for example the -o- in Modern English "corn" and the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-e-</mentioned> in Modern German <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_de_kern"><ref target="#cog_de_kern">Kern</ref></mentioned>. The suffixal ablaut is still observable within the PGmc declension itself, specifically in the alternation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ô ~ *-an- ~ *-in-</mentioned>. When the zero-grade<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *-n-</mentioned> occurred immediately after a root-final obstruent, Kluge's Law may have resulted in consonant gradation, which has made it more difficult to see the original paradigm <bibl corresp="#kroonen2011a" n="78–80, 174">Kroonen 2011a: 78–80, 174</bibl>. The PGmc<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> n</mentioned>-stem is cognate with other IE individualizing<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> n</mentioned>-stems, including Ancient Greek  <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_on_onos"><ref target="#cog_grc_on_onos">-ων ~ ωνος</ref></mentioned>, Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_o_onis"><ref target="#cog_lat_o_onis">-ō ~ -ōnis</ref></mentioned>, and Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_an"><ref target="#cog_san_an">-अन्</ref></mentioned>with nom. sg. -आ (<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-ā</mentioned>), gen. sg. -नः (<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-naḥ</mentioned>). </seg>
