            <seg type="p">Probably from a fossilized Proto-Indo-European thematic ablative singular case form used adverbially. The prehistory of the ending is disputed. Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="168" ana="#omit-author">2017: 168</bibl> derives the Proto-Germanic trimoric adverbial ending <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ô</mentioned> from Core PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-e-ad</mentioned>, itself an innovation built from the thematic locative singular <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-e</mentioned> plus the particle or postposition <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ad</mentioned> (compare Dunkel’s <bibl corresp="#dunkel2014" n="180" ana="#omit-author">2014: 180</bibl> <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*é-ad</mentioned> formation). A more traditional analysis, followed by <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="85–86">Fulk 2018: 85–86</bibl>, reconstructs the thematic ablative as<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-o-h₁ed</mentioned>, yielding pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ōd</mentioned> and then PGmc adverbial <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ô(t)</mentioned>. The same ending is preserved with a clearer ablatival sense in Gothic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_thathro"><ref target="#cog_got_thathro">𐌸𐌰𐌸𐍂𐍉</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="168, 225">Ringe 2017: 168, 225</bibl>. In adverbs derived from adjectives, the inherited ablatival value was generalized to a manner-adverbial function. Compare Proto-East Baltic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ā,</mentioned> reflected in the thematic genitive singular Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-o</mentioned> and Latvian <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-a</mentioned>, which Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="168" ana="#omit-author">2017: 168</bibl> connects with the same older <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-e-ad</mentioned> formation. </seg>
