The inherited formation was normally added to the zero grade of verbal roots and formed resultative, stative, passive, or other characterizing adjectives; it was only secondarily incorporated into verbal paradigms as a past/passive participle. Cognate formations include Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_sruta"><ref target="#cog_san_sruta">श्रुत</ref></mentioned>, Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_klutos"><ref target="#cog_grc_klutos">κλυτός</ref></mentioned>, Latin <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-tus</mentioned> as in <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_status_x2"><ref target="#cog_lat_status_x2">status</ref></mentioned> , and Proto-Slavic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tъ</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="252–53">Fulk 2018: 252–53</bibl> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="186–91">Ringe 2017: 186–91</bibl>.</seg>
<seg type="p">The specific form <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-þaz</mentioned> presupposes that the accent stood on the preceding root syllable before Verner’s law. Where the inherited suffix accent of <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_to_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_to_s">*-tó-s</ref></mentioned> was retained, the dental underwent Verner’s law, producing the related voiced variant <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-daz</mentioned>. Why some formations had root accent is uncertain. The most plausible explanation is an early morphological differentiation between participial and non-participial uses: <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_to"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_to">*-tó-</ref></mentioned> formations used as lexical adjectives acquired root accent, whereas productive participles preserved suffix accent. Fulk <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="293" ana="#omit-author">2018: 293</bibl>, following Prokosch, compares Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_rikta_x2"><ref target="#cog_san_rikta_x2">रिक्त</ref></mentioned>, an adjective with root accent, beside <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_rikta_x2"><ref target="#cog_san_rikta_x2">रिक्त</ref></mentioned>, a participle with suffix accent. Proto-Germanic may have inherited such an accentual contrast or recreated it when old participial formations became lexicalized adjectives; in either case, the retraction must predate Verner’s law and cannot simply reflect the later general fixation of PGmc accent on the initial syllable. The root-accented dental may subsequently have spread analogically to some preterite-present and irregular weak formations, although the PGmc weak dental marker as a whole probably has more than one historical source <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="292–94">Fulk 2018: 292–94</bibl>.</seg>
