The suffix belongs to the same Indo-European dental abstract/action-noun system as <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_tu_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_tu_s">*-tu-s</ref></mentioned> verbal nouns and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_to_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_to_s">*-tó-s</ref></mentioned> verbal adjectives <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="252–53">Fulk 2018: 252–53</bibl> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="74">Ringe 2017: 74</bibl>. The surface form of the suffix varied according to accent and the final consonant of the root, though these originally featured zero-grade of the root and suffix accent <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="151–52">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 151–52</bibl>. The suffix assumed different forms based on the final consonants of the base: after <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-f</mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-s</mentioned>, and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-h</mentioned>, the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">t-</mentioned> remained unshifted; it was also subject to Verner's Law if the original accent was on the suffix, in which case the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">t-</mentioned> became a <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">d-</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#lehmann1986a" n="§4.2.1">Lehmann 1986a: §4.2.1</bibl>.
