It belongs to the wider PIE instrument-suffix family <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tro-</mentioned>,<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tlo-</mentioned>,<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-dʰro-</mentioned>,<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-dʰlo-</mentioned>, which Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="74–75" ana="#omit-author">2017: 74–75</bibl> describes as often having e-grade, root-accented bases. Olsen’s treatments of the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tlom</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-trom </mentioned>family are especially important: she argues that pre-IE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tlo-</mentioned> was the unmarked variant, while <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tro-</mentioned> arose after roots containing a liquid, while <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-dʰlo-</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-dʰro- (</mentioned>or <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tʰlo-</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tʰro) </mentioned>represented conditioned aspirated variants, especially after consonantal <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂</mentioned>, with later daughter languages often leveling one allomorph or the other <bibl corresp="#olsen1988" n="43">Olsen 1988: 43</bibl> <bibl corresp="#olsen1999" n="844–45">Olsen 1999: 844–45</bibl>.
