<seg type="p">The accepted theory regarding the etymology of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ārijaz</mentioned> maintains that it entered into Proto-Germanic as a borrowing from Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_arius"><ref target="#cog_lat_arius">-ārius</ref></mentioned> via Proto-Italic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_itc-x-proto_azios"><ref target="#cog_itc-x-proto_azios">*-āzios-</ref></mentioned>, from Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_eh2so"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_eh2so">*-eh₂so-</ref></mentioned>, which was further extended with the suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-(i)yó-s</mentioned>. This idea has remained popular because the formal and functional uses of the suffix are similar in both language families. The suffix was originally used to create occupational terms from verbs in Proto-Germanic. However, it eventually became productive in creating agentive terms in the language.</seg>
<seg type="p">Alternatively, Gąsiorowski <bibl corresp="#gasiorowski2017" ana="#omit-author">2017</bibl> derives <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ārijaz</mentioned> internally, relating it to the feminine occupational suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*–astrijōn- </mentioned>(Modern English –ster; as in “spinster”). He believes it originated as an earlier alternation of a pre-Germanic collective complex <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*–sr–ih₂–ó–</mentioned> that was formed from the PIE feminine agentive base <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_sor"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_sor">*‑sōr</ref></mentioned>. This would make the masculine suffix originally native, though probably reinforced by Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_arius"><ref target="#cog_lat_arius">-ārius</ref></mentioned>. The proposal is attractive, but it has not been generally accepted; the main difficulties are the uncertain evidence for the required <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-sr- > *-zr- > -r-</mentioned> development and the indirect morphological and semantic pathways (building a masculine agent suffix from a feminine one seems unlikely at best).</seg>
