Its use as a productive abstract-noun suffix is a Germanic innovation. Proto-Germanic feminine <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ōn</mentioned>-stems created from PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">eh₂</mentioned>-stems are a parallel development: pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ī</mentioned>  + <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-n</mentioned> : pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ō </mentioned>+ <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-n </mentioned><bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="172–73">Fulk 2018: 172–73</bibl>. The suffix became productive in abstract nouns from adjectives, e.g. <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_hauhi"><ref target="#pgmc_hauhi">*hauhį̄</ref></mentioned> from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_hauhaz"><ref target="#pgmc_hauhaz">*hauhaz</ref></mentioned>, and competed with inherited <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_itho"><ref target="#pgmc_itho">*-iþō</ref></mentioned> in forming abstract feminine nouns.</seg>
