            <seg type="p">The long vowel of <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ozo"><ref target="#pgmc_ozo">*-ōzô</ref></mentioned> is specifically Germanic. Fulk <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="218" ana="#omit-author">2018: 218</bibl> follows the traditional explanation that <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ōz-</mentioned> originated when comparative <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_iz"><ref target="#pgmc_iz">*-iz</ref></mentioned> was added to adverbs in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ō</mentioned>, after which the resulting adverbial comparative was extended to adjectives. Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="317" ana="#omit-author">2017: 317</bibl> is more cautious, saying that the exact preform is not recoverable, but the suffix complex appears to have arisen by contraction with a preceding vowel and then spread by morphological remodeling. As a result, <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ozo"><ref target="#pgmc_ozo">*-ōzô</ref></mentioned> has no exact non-Germanic cognate <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="218–19">Fulk 2018: 218–19</bibl> <bibl corresp="#meier_brugger2003" n="220–22">Meier-Brügger 2003: 220–22</bibl>.</seg>
            <seg type="p">In PGmc, <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_izo"><ref target="#pgmc_izo">*-izô</ref></mentioned> was used with <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">i-</mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">u-</mentioned>, and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ja</mentioned>-stem adjectives and also with some a-stems, whereas <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ozo"><ref target="#pgmc_ozo">*-ōzô</ref></mentioned> was restricted to<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> a/ō</mentioned>-stems. The distribution among <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">a/ō</mentioned>-stem adjectives was partly lexical and analogical rather than fully predictable. In the Northwest Germanic branches, <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ozo"><ref target="#pgmc_ozo">*-ōzô</ref></mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ostaz"><ref target="#pgmc_ostaz">*-ōstaz</ref></mentioned> became the normal productive pattern, while <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_izo"><ref target="#pgmc_izo">*-izô</ref></mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_istaz"><ref target="#pgmc_istaz">*-istaz</ref></mentioned> often survived only in relic forms <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="218–20">Fulk 2018: 218–20</bibl> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="317">Ringe 2017: 317</bibl>.</seg>
