Tips for Users
Dictionary Order
The default order of the dictionary is basic alphabetical order. In our case, this means that suffixes starting with a hyphen (-) show up first. Parentheses are ignored and letters with diacritics come after letters without diacritics. The letter "þ" (thorn, pronounced like the "th" in "thorn", comes at the end of the alphabet, after "z").
Orthographical Conventions
We follow Wiktionary's conventions for Proto-Germanic. Some main things to note:
- We use plain b, d, and g for the voiced stops and fricatives representing, respectively, /b/, /β/; /d/, /d/; and /g/, /ɣ/.
- We use plain w for labialized velars after the velar.
- We use the ogonek " ˛" as the diacritic denoting a nasal vowel, such as ą.
- We use the circumflex accent "^" as the diacritic denoting an overlong vowel, such as ô.
- We use the letter thorn (þ) to denote the voiceless dental fricative [θ].
Searching
For the most part, searching is diacritic-agnostic, so entering "ango" will bring up words such as "angô", "bangōną", etc. You can enter partial words to find terms as well. We generally also provide Proto-Germanic, Proto-Indo-European, and IPA keyboard characters where needed.
