*abundiz

Runic: ᚨᛒᚢᚾᛞᛁᛉ Pronunciation: /ˈɑ.βun.diz/

noun · feminine · i-stem

Meanings

envy; jealous resentment or ill will at another’s favor or advantage

Etymology

Probably from *aba- + *undiz, originally ‘favor turned away/withheld’ > ‘disfavor, spite’ > ‘envy’. The *-d- of *abundiz beside West Germanic **abunsti- forms is not fully transparent: the *-st-/*-þ- behavior in this word-family remains problematic (Fulk 2018: 121–22; Hirt 1931: 125–26).
